The National Museum of Military History presents the original flags of the Bulgarian volunteers in the Russo-Turkish war
In honor of the 140th anniversary from the Liberation of Bulgaria the visitors of the National Museum of Military History will have the unique possibility to see the original flags of the Bulgarian Volunteer Units, amongst which – the Samara Flag. The relics – symbols of the Bulgarian strive for freedom will be exposed on March 3, when the museum traditionally will work with free admission to its permanent chronological and outside exhibitions.
The original flags of the Bulgarian Volunteer Units, that carried though the decades the Bulgarian heroism and the urge of the people to win their freedom, are five. The most popular of them are the Samara Flag that was given to the 3-rd Volunteer Unit and the Flag of the Rebels from Gorna Oryahovitsa, that was made for the April Uprising and later on given to the 4th Volunteer Unit during the Russo-Turkish War. These are the only two flags that were part of the war and were waved during the bloody fights at Stara Zagora, Shipka and Sheinovo.
The flags of 1-st, 2nd and 5th Volunteer Units did not participate at the battles of the Russo-Turkish War but they were all carried by the units at the military parade in Plovdiv on August 30, 1878. After the Liberation all the flags became flags of the Bulgarian army and later on participated in the wars for national unification.
All the flags with the exception of the Samara Flag, which will be exposed only on March 3, will be opened for the audience until March 11 in the working days of the museum.
