This monograph examines the issue of captured Bulgarians during the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885, the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, and the First World War (1915–1918). Bulgaria’s participation in these wars led to the capture of many Bulgarians by the enemy. Along with members of the Bulgarian Army, civilians, Bulgarian citizens were also taken and were often treated by the enemy state as prisoners of war – guarded and transported together with captured soldiers.
The study explores the capture and the conditions faced by Bulgarians in captivity, their return to the homeland, the care provided by the Bulgarian state and society and the attitude of different political parties toward the prisoner of war issue.
