[Věšín] embarked on his new job with great joy, enthusiasm, because he saw great talent in some of his entrusted pupils … I would hear him praise usually Atanas Mihov and Nikola Petrov… Of his other pupils, our place used to frequent Elisaveta Konsulova (Mrs. Boris Vasova), Nedyalko Velkov, Luka Perfanov, and others, whose names I have forgotten.

To us, Věšín’s paintings were a revelation. We beheld for the first time paintings that were made with such an ease, imbued with so much ether and light… I remember the delight his arrival brought us, his students… He would always have a kind word, for everyone. He would sweeten each exacting correction with such an easy, sympathetic wit, no one would feel crossed; we all looked to him with love.

from the class of Jaroslav Věšín, later specialized in Munich

The door opened, and before me came a strapping, striking man, clinching a large pipe. This, then, was Brandt’s student – the great narrator on canvas. Upon his genial face – two beautiful, honest eyes that seemed to smile.

professor at the Drawing School in Sofia
(today, The National Academy of Art)

His method did not derive from canon, from studying pedagogy texts. It was dictated by a good heart and a noble soul, that defined him. He did not forget we had arrived at the school unexperienced, uneducated, to learn, and showing compassion, he patiently encouraged us.

whom he called his spiritual mentor

Each evening [Věšín] would take a walk, in weather nice or poor, warm or cold, rainy or snowy. He would usually start down “Gurko”, turn at Perlovska River, reach the Eagle’s Bridge, and take Tsarigradsko Shose – for up to three kilometres, or till end of the pine copse … he preferred to go solo, or with a family member, so he could stop freely, whenever his heart prompted him, to observe, to chat up the peasants returning from the market.
Quite often, on these walks Věšín would encounter Ivan Vazov, who with his small dog kept almost identical itinerary. On these occasions, the two friends would converse, or simply admire jointly our simple, but oh-so-heroic peasant or marvel at the nature, which later each through their means would narrate for the generations.
