At the Prague Academy, Jaroslav Věšín already acted differently from his fellow students … he concerned himself neither with academic compositions of saints, nor with history paintings, which, for the discerning eye, one must acknowledge, are meagre models dressed up in antique props.

Karel Mádl, Czech historian and art critic,
professor at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague

The beauty of Věšín’s works lies not only in his talent, or skill; he has a soul, a great
and immense soul.

Alphonse Mucha, Czech painter,
illustrator, poster artist, jeweler, and designer

Always that cheerful, warm, only occasionally ironic tone; always that sharp, sometimes strong opinion; always that resonant, deep voice and rapid speech! And on top of that, hardworking to the point of exhaustion, and conscientious down to the smallest details.

Josef Štolba, Czech playwright,
writer, lawyer, traveller

At some point, Věšín would draft in his sketchpad movements of people, horses, dogs, or shrubs; a corps of trees, a cottage, a fountain that would spark his interest. Should he go to a hunt or to a village, he would hurriedly sketch interesting hunter characters or peasants, a threshing floor, tillage. Later, once he had chosen a subject, he would draw from these sketches, lay out his composition on the canvas in charcoal. Then, he would start layering the paint here and there, to assess the effect… now adding, then erasing a detail, strengthening, emphasizing by confidently applying the paint with a palette knife – he would step back from
the easel, examine, check, and paint again… Věšín treated each of his works with great love
and never declared one finished until he himself felt it was truly complete.

Cornelia Věšín-Genova, daughter to the artist
