ICOM Honours the Director of the National Museum of Military History for Lifetime Contribution and Leadership in Museum Work
Today, on International Museum Day, 18 May, the National Museum of Military History proudly shares the Bulgarian National Committee of ICOM’s recognition of our Director. Associate Professor Dr. Sonya Penkova was awarded the 2025 prize in the category “Lifetime Contribution and Leadership in the Museum Work.”
The award is a recognition of over 40 years of dedication to the museum profession, steadfast effort for the development of the National Museum of Military History, and her contribution as a university lecturer and active voice in the shaping of museum sector policies. The jury praised Assoc. Prof. Penkova’s work in modernising the Museum, leading its digital transition, and building of enduring professional teams.
The recognition comes in the year in which the National Museum of Military History celebrates the 110th anniversary of its establishment – another testament for the institution’s commitment to preserve Bulgarian history and to present it in a contemporary, accessible and impactful way.
