153 Years of Immortality: The National Museum of Military History Preserves the Memory of Vasil Levski

Today we mark 153 years since the hanging of Vasil Levski. The Apostle of Freedom is one of the beacons of Bulgarian history and his cause – a free and sovereign Bulgaria, continues to inspire generations of Bulgarians.
The largest collection of the Apostle’s personal belongings is preserved at the National Museum of Military History. It is part of the museum’s permanent exhibition and allows visitors the opportunity to commune with authentic relics – silent witnesses to his life, dedicated to the struggle for a free Bulgaria. Among the most valuable exhibits are Levski’s hair, preserved by his mother, the small cross given to him by his uncle, a water flask, and his M1870 Gasser revolver.
The Museum’s website features the archive of the search for Levski’s grave, created in connection with the initiated by the Main Military Museum (today, the NMMH) project to locate the remains of the Apostle.
The Museum’s mission is not only to preserve the memory of the Nation’s heroes, but also to pass it on to future generations in an accessible way. The National Museum of Military History offers year-round educational programs dedicated to Vasil Levski.
The program “Vasil Levski and His Secret Organization” is comprised of a museum tour, a gamified module, and an interactive presentation. Participants cano decipher an original letter by Levski with the help of a range of tools, while adhering to the principles of conspiracy and secrecy.
“My Hero, Levski” is designed with the youngest in mind, and take place directly in front of the display case with Vasil Levski’s personal belongings, where children are immersed into a tale recounting the life of the Apostle.
The programs are adapted according to the participants’ age and interests and encourage active engagement, curiosity, and reflection on the values for which Levski gave his life and are equally suitable for organized school groups and family visits.
