Immersive space at the National Museum of Military History presents the scars of war
From November 14, the date of the first massive bombing of Sofia during World War II, to April 17, 2020, the date of the last one, the immersive space “The Scars of War: The Lost Architectural Heritage of Sofia” will be opened for visit.
With sensory impulses, authentic video footage, photo archives and emblematic exhibits, the visitor will be “immersed” in the period before and during the bombings, will wander through the calm and beautiful pre-war Sofia, will witness the devastating blow that war inflicted on the city and will experience the fate of the hundreds people who lost their homes. The memories of eyewitnesses, recreated by famous Bulgarian actors such as Stefan Mavrodiev, Rusi Chanev, Meglena Karalambova, Valentin Ganev and Assen Blatechki will complete the narrative about some of the most dramatic days of the Bulgarian capital.
For the first time, the fighter Messerschmitt 109 G6 found near the village of Maritza in 2018 will be presented to the public, as a reminder of the Bulgarian pilots who have imprinted their names in history with their sacrifice and efforts to save the capital.
Specially designed interactive applications present the fate of public and administrative buildings, private homes, churches and monuments – a material symbol of the capital’s close association with European cultural processes in the pre-war years, some of which irretrievably lost and also the historical facts about most of the air strikes on Sofia.
“The Scars of War: The Lost Architectural Heritage of Sofia” is a project realized in collaboration with the Bulgarian National Film Archives, funded by the “Culture” programme of Sofia Municipality.
