Exhibition “The War We Could Not Avoid”

By innovative design and thematic separation of space, the exhibition recreates the events, personalities, and decisions that led to Bulgaria’s entry into the war on the side of the Tripartite Pact and its later reorientation and rejoining of the Anti-Hitler Coalition.

Through photographic archives, video footage, and sounds from the war, the exhibition engages all of the visitors’ senses and provokes them to experience the dramatic events of that time. Designed in the contrasting black and white, provoking a reflection on the nuances in Bulgaria’s position against the background of the both possible and impossible choices facing the state choosing whose side to take in the conflict. The accompanying photo story about the development of events on the international political and military scene further reinforces the feeling that Bulgaria is trapped with no alternative.
The narrative of the briefly achieved ideal of national unity, the heroism of Bulgarian pilots sacrificing themselves and the rescue of Bulgarian Jews contrasts the challenge of preserving themselves and remaining faithful to human virtues forgetting senseless cruelty, hopelessness, and death suffocating the world during the war years The numerous interactive applications in the exhibition “The War We Could Not Avoid” will add to the audience’s understanding of the global conflict.
